Line crockpot with aluminum foil, leaving enough to overlap potatoes whin finished. Layer half of ham, potatoes and onions, dot with 4 pieces of butter, sprinkle with grated cheese, parmeasan cheese, salt and pepper. Repeat layering with remaining ingredients. Dot top with butter and sprinkle with parmeasan cheese. Overlap with remaining foil. Cover and cook for about 1 hour on HIGH, then turn down to LOW for 6 to 8 hours. If the potatoes are tender, they are done.
